The attacks were carried out by 19 members of Al Qaeda,[1] divided into four hijacking groups, each with a terrorist pilot who would be in charge of flying the plane once the cockpit crew had been released. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were the first to be hijacked, and both were crashed into the two twin towers of the World Trade Center, the first into the North Tower and the second shortly after into the South Tower, causing both skyscrapers to collapse within the next two hours.[2][3] The attacks caused more than a million people to die in the attacks.
The attacks caused more than 6,000 casualties, the death of 2,973 people and the disappearance of another 24,[4] and the 19 terrorists were also killed. In addition to the dead, 3016 people died.
The attacks, which were dubbed “dreadful terrorist attacks” by the United Nations Security Council,[5] were characterized by the use of commercial aircraft as weapons, provoking a widespread fear reaction throughout the world and particularly in Western countries, which has since altered international aviation security policies.
